Firearms Trafficking
The use of firearms by criminals endangers the safety of citizens in all countries of the world. As well as their obvious use in armed robberies and murder, they are also linked to a wide range of other crimes. These include corruption, environmental crime, human trafficking, maritime piracy, organized crime and terrorist activities.
Small arms and light weapons are easy for criminals to conceal and transport, so trafficking in firearms is a lucrative business which, in turn, fuels and funds other types of serious crimes.
“We must connect the dots between crime cases involving firearms across different countries”
The use of firearms by criminals poses a significant threat to the safety and security of citizens worldwide. Beyond their obvious role in armed robberies and homicides, firearms are intricately linked to a wide range of other crimes, including corruption, environmental crime, human trafficking, maritime piracy, organized crime, and terrorist activities. Small arms and light weapons, due to their ease of concealment and transport, are particularly attractive to criminals, making firearms trafficking a lucrative and dangerous enterprise. This illicit trade not only fuels violence but also provides financial resources that enable other serious crimes.
1.Strengthening Cross-Border Intelligence Sharing
Project Situation
Firearms trafficking is a transnational crime that requires a coordinated international response. Criminal networks exploit gaps in intelligence sharing and jurisdictional boundaries to move firearms across borders undetected.
Project Aims
To enhance the sharing of intelligence and data on firearms trafficking among law enforcement agencies worldwide.
To identify and dismantle transnational firearms trafficking networks.
To improve the tracking and tracing of illegal firearms.
Project Activities
INTCIPOL is developing a centralized database to track and trace illegal firearms. This database will enable real-time information sharing among law enforcement agencies. INTCIPOL facilitates the creation of joint task forces that bring together experts from multiple countries to investigate and disrupt firearms trafficking networks. INTCIPOL provides specialized training to law enforcement officials on intelligence gathering, data analysis, and cross-border collaboration.
2.Disrupting Firearms Supply Chains
Project Situation
Criminal networks rely on complex supply chains to traffic firearms, often using legal loopholes and corrupt officials to facilitate their operations.
Project Aims
- To identify and disrupt the supply chains used by firearms traffickers.
- To prevent the diversion of legal firearms into illegal markets.
- To strengthen regulatory frameworks for firearms production and distribution.
Project Activities
- Supply Chain Monitoring: INTCIPOL works with governments and regulatory bodies to monitor the production, sale, and distribution of firearms. This includes conducting audits of licensed firearms dealers and manufacturers.
- Corruption Prevention: INTCIPOL supports anti-corruption initiatives to prevent officials from facilitating firearms trafficking.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: INTCIPOL engages with local communities to raise awareness about the dangers of firearms trafficking and encourage reporting of suspicious activities.

3.Enhancing Forensic and Investigative Capabilities
Project Situation
Investigating firearms trafficking requires specialized forensic and investigative skills to trace the origins of firearms, analyze ballistic evidence, and build strong legal cases.
Project Aims
- To enhance the forensic and investigative capabilities of law enforcement agencies.
- To improve the collection and analysis of ballistic evidence.
- To support the prosecution of firearms traffickers.
Project Activities
The International Police Law Enforcement Commission (INTCIPOL) provides specialized training to law enforcement officials on ballistic analysis, firearm identification, and evidence collection. International Police Law Enforcement Commission (INTCIPOL) supports the establishment and modernization of forensic laboratories to analyze ballistic evidence and trace firearms. INTCIPOL facilitates collaboration between law enforcement agencies and forensic experts to solve cross-border firearms trafficking cases. INTCIPOL invests in research to develop new forensic technologies and techniques for tracing firearms and analyzing ballistic evidence.
